Starcity is so proud to announce our partnership with The Transgender District, launching a housing subsidy program to provide equitable, stable, gender affirming and permanent housing opportunities for transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and intersex individuals throughout the Bay Area.
San Francisco, CA — Starcity and The Transgender District will be launching a housing subsidy program to provide equitable, stable, gender affirming and permanent housing opportunities for trans, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and intersex persons.
Housing Opportunities for Trans Tenants (HOTT) Program will welcome tenants starting March 2021 in various units throughout the Bay Area –– in locations such as North of the Panhandle, North Beach, Mission Dolores, and Downtown Oakland — providing a substantial subsidy for qualifying individuals. The Transgender District is thrilled to partner with Starcity, a local developer focused on building accessible housing opportunities through the creation of “coliving” spaces, designed to foster community.
“Amidst a financially crippling global pandemic and the forces of gentrification ever-so present in the Bay Area, The Transgender District aims to ensure trans, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and intersex individuals have access to housing opportunities in a geographical location that bears so much trans history dating back to the Compton Cafeteria Riots and beyond.” said Jupiter Peraza , Program Associate for the Transgender District and the coordinator of the new housing initiative.
The goal of the program is to promote permanent, affordable housing solutions for transgender individuals who are gainfully employed in lower income status, enrolled in postsecondary education, and/or transgender people with credit score and limited rental history as barriers to independent, affordable housing in San Francisco. The Transgender District has partnered with Our Trans Home SF, a local transgender led housing initiative of the St. James Infirmary to ensure expanded access to supportive resources such as case management, linkage to care services, COVID 19 testing, and more.
“I’m so thrilled that we are launching a housing effort that I believe meets a huge, unmet need of Transgender people in San Francisco- affordable housing and permanent housing solutions for transgender people who may be working in service industry or entry level positions and finding that they can’t truly afford the rent in San Francisco- even with rents dropping significantly.” said, Aria Sa’id, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Transgender District. “I’m also grateful for the incredible support in this collaboration with Starcity – a local developer that has truly been an ally in our fight for accessible housing solutions, and have dedicated their work to expanding housing access, and having really fabulous housing options at an incredible price point.”.
“We’re excited and honored to partner with the Transgender District on a much-needed housing initiative that will make San Francisco more accessible to the Transgender community’s workforce. The pandemic-induced recession has made it even harder for the community to afford to live here, and this initiative plans to narrow the gap. Starcity’s mission is to make great cities accessible to everyone, and partnering with Aria and her team will allow us to offer affordable rents, inclusive placemaking, and a platform that creates housing security,” said Mo Sakrani, Co-Founder and CIO of Starcity.
